Glen Van Arsdell, MD

About On October 1, 2018, Dr. Glen Van Arsdell officially started his career at UCLA as the Chief of Congenital Cardiovascular Surgery. Prior to joining the UCLA team Dr. Van Arsdell was a Staff Surgeon at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children where he served as Head of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery since 2001.
Dr. Van Arsdell received his Medical Degree from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in 1986 and then went on to train in Cardiovascular and Thoracic surgery. He was a fellow at Toronto's famed Hospital for Sick Children in 1994 and at the Toronto General Hospital in 1995. Dr. Van Arsdell joined the staff at SickKids in 1996. He quickly developed a reputation as an outstanding congenital cardiac surgeon with a focus on neonatal repairs, complex palliations and adult congenital surgery.
His academic work is currently focused on developing patient specific precision surgery for Tetralogy of Fallot. Towards this end, he currently has two PhD candidates conducting studies in Tetralogy including a global enrollment study.
Dr. Van Arsdell has received several grants for his research endeavors and has co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts on various aspects of congenital heart surgery. Dr. Van Arsdell is a master teacher, and he has spearheaded the use of 3D printing as a means of improving surgical training. He also has an interest in the development of event based databases for program management, and ultimately as a tool for determination of best clinical practices.
